One of the common breakdowns that happen in communication whether you’re speaking with one of your direct reports or you’re speaking with your spouse is the act of pseudo-listening. When it kind of looks like you’re listening but you’re not actually listening.
You might be giving the other person the floor, you may even be refraining from interrupting them but you’re so busy crafting your rebuttal inside your mind that you’re not actually giving their points your full attention. You’re not truly trying to let it in and contemplate their point of view.
Now, this becomes even more difficult if you’re starting to feel emotionally heated and you’re feeling very deeply invested in that particular topic. then pseudo-listening becomes very easy to slip into and authentic listening becomes more challenging.
So, food for thought. Are you a pseudo-listener?
