Today I want to talk to all of you devoted husbands and fathers out there.
There’s a lot of research coming out about how women, and mothers in particular, are taking on a lot of the emotional burden of getting their family through this pandemic. That is a role that a lot of women take on willingly, and can do it for a while. At some point though, her unmet needs that are going neglected while she’s prioritizing everyone else, may become a ticking time bomb. It’s not sustainable.
Every fall, I see the conflict and stress level in families increase. It tends to rise shortly after we get settled into the new school year, and this year has many more stressors than the average one. So the strategy I would love for you to employ this month while you can still get ahead of the game is to pull your partner aside and ask them:
- What worked and what didn’t work for you in spring?
- What do we need to readjust for our family’s attempts at sustainability in this pandemic that keeps dragging on?
- What do you need more of from me?
- What do you need less of from me?
Try to open up a dialogue where the two of you can co-create a new way of tackling the new school year together in tandem.
